Your new brows or lip blush may look beautifully defined when you leave the salon, but the healing period is where the result truly settles. Thoughtful semi permanent makeup aftercare protects the skin while pigment stabilises, helping your treatment heal evenly and retain its intended shape and colour.
The first few days can feel slightly unfamiliar. Brows often appear darker and sharper than expected, while lip blush can look brighter, deeper or a little swollen immediately after treatment. This is a normal part of the process, not a sign that your final result will be too bold. Your skin needs time to recover, and patience is one of the best things you can give it.
Semi Permanent Makeup Aftercare Starts at Home
Your artist will always give you personalised aftercare instructions based on your treatment, skin type and the technique used. Those instructions should be your priority. Microbladed brows, ombré powder brows and lip blush all heal differently, so there is no single routine that suits every client.
As a general rule, the treated area should be kept clean, protected and left alone as much as possible. Avoid touching it unless you have freshly washed hands, and do not pick at flaking skin or scabs. It can be tempting, particularly when brows begin to look patchy or lips start to peel, but removing skin before it is ready can lift pigment and affect the healed finish.
For the first day, carefully blot any lymph fluid as advised by your artist. This clear fluid is a normal part of healing. Keeping the area gently managed at this stage helps prevent heavy crusting without overworking the skin.
If you have been advised to use an aftercare balm or ointment, apply only the smallest amount with clean hands or a clean cotton bud. More is not better. A thick layer can make the area overly moist and may interfere with the healing process. Some treatments and skin types are best healed with little or no product, which is why your individual guidance matters.
The First 7 to 14 Days: What to Avoid
For a polished, long-lasting result, plan to be a little more careful with your routine while the skin heals. The aim is to prevent excess moisture, friction, irritation and early fading.
Avoid getting the treated area wet for the period advised by your artist. When washing your face, cleanse around the brows carefully and keep strong skincare products well away from them. With lip blush, drink carefully, avoid soaking the lips and follow your artist’s guidance around cleansing.
Sweat, steam and heat can all make healing more difficult in the early stage. It is usually best to pause intense workouts, swimming, saunas, steam rooms and very hot baths until the skin has settled. This may feel inconvenient before a holiday or a busy social week, so timing your appointment well makes a real difference.
Sun exposure is another common cause of premature fading. Keep the area out of direct sunshine while it is healing. Once fully healed, protecting your brows and lips from UV exposure will help preserve the colour over time. This matters especially for clients who spend lots of time outdoors or are heading away somewhere sunny.
For the same reason, avoid tanning beds, facial treatments, exfoliation, retinol, acids and active skincare around the treated area until you have been cleared to return to your normal routine. These products can be excellent in the right place, but fresh semi-permanent makeup is not the place for them.
Make-up should also stay away from healing brows and lips. Foundation, brow pencil, lipstick and gloss can introduce bacteria or create friction before the skin has closed. It is a short pause for a result that is designed to save you time in your everyday routine afterwards.
Brow Aftercare: Microblading and Ombré Powder Brows
Fresh brows usually look stronger, darker and more precise than their healed result. Over the following days, they may tighten, flake and appear to lose colour. This stage can cause unnecessary worry, particularly when pigment seems to disappear beneath the healing skin. In many cases, colour returns gradually as the skin completes its recovery.
Try not to judge your brows day by day. Healing is rarely perfectly even. One brow may seem to fade or flake before the other because each side of the face can heal differently. Your natural skin, oil levels, lifestyle and aftercare all play a part.
Avoid sleeping directly on your face if possible, especially for the first few nights. A clean pillowcase and a little extra care can reduce rubbing and keep the area fresh. Keep hair products, fake tan, perfume and facial sprays away from the brows too, as these can irritate the skin or affect pigment retention.
Clients with oily skin may find that healed colour appears softer than clients with drier skin. This does not mean the treatment has gone wrong. It simply means technique, colour choice and touch-up planning need to be tailored to your skin, which is one reason a detailed consultation is so valuable.
Lip Blush Aftercare: Keep Healing Gentle
Lip blush often begins with a vivid, freshly tinted appearance, then softens noticeably as it heals. Mild swelling and tenderness are common straight after treatment, particularly if your lips are naturally sensitive. The colour will usually look much lighter after the initial peeling phase before settling into a softer, more natural tint.
Keep your lips clean and use the recommended aftercare product sparingly. Avoid licking, biting or picking at peeling skin. Saliva can dry the lips further, while picking can create uneven patches of colour.
For the first few days, choose foods carefully. Spicy, salty and very hot foods can feel uncomfortable on fresh lips. It is also sensible to avoid messy meals that require lots of wiping. Drinking through a straw may be recommended at the beginning, depending on your artist’s instructions.
If you are prone to cold sores, let your artist know before your appointment. Lip treatments can sometimes trigger an outbreak in susceptible clients, and you may need advice from a pharmacist or healthcare professional before treatment. Never ignore unusual symptoms or assume they are part of normal healing.
The Healing Stages Can Look Uneven
Semi-permanent makeup is a two-stage process, not an instant final result. Initial darkness, flaking, fading and gradual colour return are all common. The skin is repairing itself while the pigment settles, so the mirror can tell a different story each morning.
Most clients need a perfecting appointment after the initial treatment. This is the opportunity to assess healed colour, shape and any areas where pigment has not retained as strongly. It is particularly helpful for balancing a brow tail, deepening an ombré effect or building lip blush colour gently rather than forcing a darker result in one session.
Your lifestyle can influence how long results last. Sun exposure, frequent swimming, active skincare, oily skin and some medications may all encourage faster fading. A lighter, natural-looking result is often the most flattering choice, but it may also need more regular colour refreshes than a more defined finish. Your artist can help you choose what suits your look and maintenance preferences.
When to Contact Your Artist or Seek Advice
A little redness, sensitivity, tightness and flaking can be expected. However, increasing pain, severe swelling, spreading redness, heat in the skin, discharge or a rash should not be ignored. Contact your artist promptly for guidance and seek medical advice where appropriate.
It is also worth getting in touch if you are unsure about a product, accidentally get the area very wet, or feel anxious about a stage of healing. Asking early is always better than trying a home remedy that may irritate the treatment area.
At Lash Up & Beauty, we want every client to feel informed as well as confident. Give your new brows or lip blush the same care you gave to choosing them: a calm routine, clean hands and enough time for the colour to settle into the soft, polished enhancement you came for.
